Problem Statement

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria, the cost of food in Nigeria increased 35.41 percent in January of 2024 over the same month in the previous year. Addressing the widespread issue of food insecurity in Nigeria is crucial, as families struggle with the challenge of affording three square meals daily due to the escalating cost of food. The soaring prices not only strain household budgets but also create a situation where even basic sustenance comes at an exorbitant price. This crisis, deeply embedded in the economic landscape, requires urgent attention and strategic interventions to alleviate the hardships faced by families nationwide. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, there is a clear need for a comprehensive initiative that empowers both farmers and community members. Versa Agro’s proposed Farm2Feed Initiative aims not only to alleviate the economic strain caused by expensive food but also to foster a community-driven approach to sustainable agriculture.

About the Initiative

We are excited to present the Farm2Feed Initiative, designed to tackle the issue of expensive food in Nigeria while empowering the residents of Kwara State. The initiative will be rolled out in two phases. In the first phase, we will plow and ridge up to 1 hectare of land for farmers cohort in each village and town in Kwara State. In the second phase, we will engage passionate farmers from each village and town in Kwara State for 12 months. Each participant will be allocated one plot of land, provided with farming equipment, and guided in cultivating essential crops such as rice, beans, tomatoes, and pepper.

Objectives

1. To enrich lives through skill acquisition and financial empowerment.

2. To address genuine food problems in the community.

3.To empower farmers to contribute actively to the agricultural sector.

Benefits of Phase 1

1.Reduced Costs: We are taking the financial burden off the Farmers

2.Enhanced Productivity: With land prepared on time, farmers can plant their crops optimally, aligning with the best growing conditions.

3.Improved Food Security: Increased agricultural productivity contributes to food security at the local and regional levels.

Benefits of Phase 2

1.Empowering Farmers: Allocate one plot of land to each participant, provide farming equipment, and guide them in cultivating essential crops to enhance food security.

2.Monthly Stipend: Grant participants a monthly stipend ranging from N30,000 to N40,000 to alleviate financial burdens and ensure sustained engagement.

3. Harvest Benefits: Allow participants to benefit from 10% – 15% of their entire harvest to encourage dedication and commitment to the farming process.

4. Food Exchange Program: Permit participants to swap their harvested food varieties at no additional cost, promoting diverse agricultural production and catering to individual preferences.

5. Community Involvement: Open the initiative to residents of Irepodun Local Government, focusing on individuals with a passion for farming and solving food problems.

Selection
Criteria

To be eligible for the Farm2Feed Initiative, individuals must:

Be indigene of Kwara State.
Be farmers or express a strong interest in farming.
Demonstrate a commitment to solving food problems.
Be available for a period of 12 months. Have at least a hectare of land (for the phase 1)

Our Request

The Kwara Renaissance Group seeks the support of the Royal Highnesses in selecting capable and deserving individuals for the Farm2Feed Initiative—five candidates for Phase 1 and five candidates for Phase 2 in each of your communities. Your guidance and insight will be pivotal in identifying individuals who can significantly impact the community’s agricultural landscape. Additionally, we are using this medium to invite all the Obas in the OLUPO-IN-COUNCIL to the flag-off ceremony of this initiative, which will be held in Ilorin. An official invitation will be sent to this effect.
